Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) was standardized in 1981 to store data in arrays. One feature allows image metadata to be stored that can describe file contents in keyword/value pairs. Astrophotography files are commonly stored using the FITS format. Scientific data is often stored with the image. Many programming languages have support for reading and writing FITS files.
